1897 (Sept) Envelope from Merawi, Sudan to England, franked by 4th Issue 5 m. rose horizontal pair (one defective), tied with MERAWI Star and Crescent circular datestamp and an additional strike in the lower left, backstamped in transit Walfa and Cairo and arrival in England, slight cvr wrinkles, very scarce

Provenance: Dr. William Byam

Note: There was no Egyptian Post Office in Merawi, and as such “overprinted Sudan” stamps should have been used. The date on the Merawi cancellation is shown as 1896 while all other cancellations on the reverse of the envelope are showing 1897. This letter was sent by Captain E. A. (later Colonel) Stanton, designer of the Camel type Sudan stamps to his father General Sir E. Staton.
