Description
1865-67 2pi Blue and rose tied on outer lettersheet to Beirut initially posted at French Agency in LATTAKIA, Syria, where France 40c applied, tied by indistinct ‘5091’ large figures in lozenge of dots with incomplete strike of cds for 22 Feb 1967 (=10 Feb Old Style). Faint boxed ‘PD’ (paid to destination) alongside. Sender missed the French mail-boat by one day, so letter transferred to Russian Agency which had a ship leaving that day. 2pi applied and tied by dateless seal-type cachet translated in full: RUSSIAN COMPANY FOR STEAM SHIPPING AND TRADE AGENCY OF LATTAKIA. Faint PORT LATAKIE 9 Fev 1867 (Tchil. Type 4 (error for ’10 Fev’ old style)) in blue alongside. Letter with manuscript Lattakia origin. A few small tonespots do not detract from this unique combination cover. Ex Collection François. Certs Baudot (2001), Calves (2002), Scheller (2010)
