1. The Fourth Issue

These stamps were produced by Thomas De La Rue & Co.

of London and can be divided in four groups:

· First Period 1884-1883, characterized by the initial colours and currency.

· Second Period 1884-1888, characterized by a change to the colour scheme recommended by the UPU.

· Third Period 1888-1915, characterized with the replacement of currency from paras to milliemes and in 1902 the conversion to chalk-surfaced paper.

· Also after the First Period, the 1884 20 paras Provisional Surcharge is shown.

Several hand-painted essays are shown, many are unique. Die proofs produced by the printer are presented. A complete pane of 60 of the 5 m. proof in black affixed on card is part of this collection. A complete pane of the 20 paras surcharge proof is also seen. Imperforate proofs are shown. Unique specimens are included. Plate and watermark varieties are described. Large blocks of the issued stamps with positional control blocks or inter-panneau can be seen. Most of the values are shown in full panes of 60.

Covers showing different usage are part of this collection, of great importance and rarity is the usage of the 5 piastres green. A parcel card with an extraordinary usage of an irregular block of nine of the 5 piatres is included. Another important cover has a strip of three 20 paras provisional surcharge on 5 piastres green, variety with surcharge inverted. A cover with a bisected 4 m. is described and a 10 piastres on cover is shown.

2. The Pictorial Issues

Two printers produced the issues:

· 1914: Thomas De La Rue & Co.

· 1920-22 Harrison & Sons of London

· Also in 1915 a Provisional Surcharge was produced by overprinting the 3 m. with 2 m.

The First Pictorial Issues collection starts with a group of essays followed by proofs with printer’s notation. Large die proofs are presented next. Imperforate proofs of the issued stamps with watermark are seen. A group of imperforate blocks of proofs with control and printer’s initial are presented, each block being unique.

Specimens are included, some in imperforate blocks of 6. Issued stamps are seen next, some with plate varieties. Covers and parcel cards are presented and show different values of the issued stamps.

The 1915 Provisional Surcharge. An essay with the unique control position is presented followed by UPU specimens. Several plate flaws and surcharge varieties are displayed. An array of covers are part of this collection.

Watermark triple Crescent and Star. Sketches are seen for the production of the triple Crescent and Star watermark, and a piece of watermarked paper

The Second Pictorial Issues – Harrison’s. The collection starts with some proofs of the issue stamps followed by specimens. Plate and watermark varieties are shown. Full sheets of certain values can be seen.

Covers with different values of the issued stamps are displayed. Of particular importance are two insured covers.

3. The Crown Overprint Issue

On February 28, 1922, independence was granted to Egypt. Shortly thereafter, the reigning Sultan Fouad, was given the title of King. The current stamps were overprinted with a crown and Arabic inscription “Egyptian Kingdom 15 March

1922”. Five basic types of overprint have been identified. Four of these were applied in Cairo (one lithographed and three typographed) and one was applied in

London by Harrison’s. Detailed illustrations and descriptions of the various types and varieties are given throughout the collection.

The Crown Overprint collection starts with an essay, followed by original drawings on tracing paper of the different types. Plate proofs are seen. Colour trial of the overprint in red on the 1 m. and 15 m. in control blocks, unique items are part of the collection.

Specimens from the UPU archives of three countries are presented. Rare demonstration proofs of Harrison’s follow.

Type I Crown Overprint. Crushed Crown variety is seen on all known denomination with such a variety, several are in blocks of 6. A complete and unique pane of the 3 m. with crushed crown is part of the collection.

Plate and watermark varieties are presented. Covers and parcel cards are seen, of particular interest is a parcel card with 30 examples of the 200 m.

Type II Crown Overprint. Several plate and watermark varieties are illustrated. Panes of some of the value are included. Several covers and post cards are seen.

Type IIA Crown Overprint. The scarce type IIA is part of this collection. Stamps and overprint varieties are seen, some are rare. Rare covers and post cards are presented, they are certified by C. F. Hass.

Type III Crown Overprint. Stamps with control blocks can be seen together with used blocks. Plate, overprint and watermark varieties are included. Several covers and post cards are shown.

Type IV Crown Overprint. Stamps with control blocks can be seen together with used blocks. Varieties of the overprint, plate and watermark are then presented.

Full sheets of the 5 m., 10 m., 20 m., and 50 m., are part of the collection together with complete upper pane of the scarce 1 m. and part of the 15 m. sheet comprising of the full lower pane. This group is unique.

Finally, several examples of covers and a parcel card are in this collection.
