Description
1858 80 parale brick-red on bluish paper franking a “Timbru Domnesc” 20 parale document. A rare 80 parale brick-red on bluish paper, just touched at the top, otherwise with decent to large margins, cancelled with an oval violet “FRANCO JASSY” marking, and accompanied by a 3/7 (1861) Jassy CDS in the same colour on a two-page document sent on 3/7 (1861) from Iasi to Falticeni. The cover shows some aging and minor imperfections but is generally in fine condition. The imprinted revenue “Timbru Domnesc” (“Princely Stamp”) of 20p was actually the first Moldavian stamp, printed at Atelia Timbrului in Iasi in 1856, the same place where the Moldavian Bull’s Heads were printed in 1858 using the same press. Only one printing of the 80p on bluish paper is known; the total print run of the 1/4/1861 delivery was 8,000 stamps, though it remains unclear whether a portion was on white paper due to its rarity, which Heimbüchler compares to that of the 54 parale of the 1st Issue. About a dozen single frankings are recorded, but the combination with the scarce “Timbru Domnesc” fiscal document is unique. Signed Calves, cert. Cherata AIEP (2024). Catalogue ref: Mi. 7ax
