3d red on medium wove paper, fine to large margins, tied by blue concentric circles on entire from BURFORD, C.W., MY 18 1855 circular datestamp, with the second digit of the day added in ink, endorsed “Money”, and struck with a red “REGISTERED” handstamp, addressed to Hamilton. Very fine.
One of the earliest registered covers in Canada, from the first month of official registration.
Note: Registration in Canada commenced on 1 May 1855. The fee was 1d, prepaid in cash, and a certificate of registration was issued on request. No insurance or indemnity applied until 1904. Only items with the letter fee of 3d paid could be registered.
