2d blue, position 12, close to large margins and neatly tied by framed boxed ‘BLACK RIVER/JA.9.1858’, on 1858 folded entire from Black River via “overland mail” to La Fleche, France, with an array of transit and arrival markings on front and reverse, covers faults and repaired by reinforcements, an attractive usage, apparently unique
Rate: 4d overseas rate. Manuscript “Paid 4” indicating a further charge of 2d having been paid in cash, making the 4d overseas rate, as per the postal rates from the Government Gazette of 1st May 1858 and handstruck “8” decimes charge in black (ds on arrival in France with 8 decimes = 7 1/2 grams), under the Anglo-French Postal Convention on 1856.
