Lot 20075 – B53 “PENOE” COVER: 1848-59 Post Paid 2d blue, worn impression, with “PENOE” for “PENCE” tied by “B53” barred oval on part cover
B53 “PENOE” COVER
2d blue, position 7 showing the “PENOE” variety, large even margins and tied by ‘B53 DUPLEX’ cancel dated ‘MAURITIUS/B.SP.22.66’, on cover front and backflap addressed to Savanne, backflap showing ‘GRANDE SAVANNE/B.SP.23.66’ cds, some toning, an important rarity as the use of local letters addressed for delivery from one provincial town to another are extremely rare, as well as being an extremely late usage, perhaps the latest for the Post Paid issue
Note: Kanai describes this as “Probably only one known recorded of the “Post Paid” 2d stamps on cover with “B53″ cancellation”
Provenance: Dale-Lichtenstein, October 1968 (Lot 31)
Hiroyaki Kanai, November 1993 (Lot 123A)

Expertise: Cert. David Brandon (2007)
