Lot 70100 – 1890 (Nov 12) Envelope sent registered from Sandakan to London
AN ASTONISHING UNIQUE FRANKING
1890 (Nov 12) Envelope sent registered from Sandakan to London franked by 1886-87 1c block of 6 and pairs (2, both on reverse), 2c (9 including 2 pairs), 4c (5, a pair on reverse), 8c strip of 4 and 1889 3c (5, a pair on reverse) and 5c (5, 3 on reverse), all cancelled by 14 bar, red Sandakan dispatch and London arrival (20.12) on obverse, framed “REGISTERED No” on reverse, central fold affecting one 8c and small part of envelope missing top left on opening. A remarkable commercial franking with stunning visual appeal, and a magnificent exhibition showpiece
Note: The rate corresponds to eight times 14c postage plus 8c registration fee which was introduced on 1 November 1886; however, this is mail for transiting London. Another explanation of the rate is ten times the 1/2 oz rate to UK without registration. Either way appears to be a miscalculation by the postal clerk
