The geographical situation of these islands was ideal for trade and postal services in the Caribbean area. Located at the heart of the Americas it was one of the most important piers for ships to Europe. The growth of St.Croix as an important hub was steady from the late 17th cen- tury to the early 20th century as shown by the various decrees in the first part of this section. Particularly the “Transit Mail” section contains a wide variety of items which are also of great inter- est to other postal history collectors.
