David Feldman The Joseph Chalhoub Collection of Egypt II. Commemoratives Monday, December 9, 2019
33 Geneva, December 9, 2019 Lot N° Symbol(s) / Photo Page The Nile Post Cat. N° Estimate ( € ) 1926 International Navigation Congress in Cairo The design of this commemorative was taken from the bas-relief on the walls of Der el Bahary Temple of Thebes (Luxor), built around 1500 B.C. by Queen Hatshepsut. She ordered these bas-reliefs to represent scenes from a commercial expedition of 5 vessels to the land of Punt (now the Somali Coast), to bring back precious articles such as myrrh, incense, ivory, ebony, gold and leopard skins. The artist followed very closely the ancient bas-relief, eliminating the four sailors on the lower mast and making a few modifications. 10033 A E319 1926 International Navigation Congress 5m photographic essay affixed to presentation card from the Survey Department, 175x198mm, with Arabic inscriptions above and date at lower right, unique Provenance: Vahan Andonian 2’400
